Joseph Kabila named leader of DR Congo rebel alliance
- •The former president leads the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation, an alliance that includes M23 rebels, who seized much of eastern DR Congo last year.
- •Kabila has vowed to topple President Félix Tshisekedi, his former successor and coalition partner; the rebels’ ability to achieve that goal remains uncertain.
- •A military court sentenced Kabila to death in absentia in September 2025 on charges including treason and financing violence. He rejected the accusations.
- •Elections are scheduled for 2028, but Tshisekedi has warned that fighting in the east could delay them. The opposition C64 coalition rejected Kabila’s rebellion and called for talks.
